Well, I see aagrophototrsphers shooting in narrow-band color that present the sky differently with what is typically called the “Hubble palette”. That’s different. Personally, I don’t really like it that much. Maybe I am just old and set in my ways, but to me it is like seeing, say, an Ansel Adams black and white shot of Half Dome in infrared. Yes, it’s different. Is it better? Is different just for the sake of different better? I don’t think so. I have seen an unbelievable amount of crap in my 30+ years of photography that was different just to be different. Tilt the horizon and put a black border around it and call it art. I am not particularly fond of the theory that artists should be constantly breaking new ground either. Some do, and that is what makes them great. But to criticize the craftsmen who consistently produce excellent work for not doing something “different” seems to under-appreciate and under-value what they do (I’m not saying that you are doing this, just noting it in general).I think in the last couple of years that the “going deeper and deeper” imaging is what has really exploded the quality of the astrophotography that we see. What has always fascinated me about astrophotography is that it makes things visible that we can’t see with our ordinary vision. I never get tired of that amazement. That in itself is pretty different.Personally I am continually astonished by these deeper pictures, and that is plenty good enough for me.I am sure if something “different” and also “better” came along, I would be amazed by that too.Is it possible to present the sky “differently”? Yes, I am sure it is. Different non-visual wavelengths presented visually, different passbands mapped to different colors. I see a lot of “different” stuff around. I see Chandra and Spitzer making a lot of discoveries, and I appreciate what they are doing on an intellectual level, but I can not say that the images blow me away visually, viscerally and emotionally like the normal optical ones do.Do the Chandra and Spitzer images do it for you? They are “different”…
